Dyson is unveiling its latest innovation in hair care technology with the introduction of the Supersonic r, a cutting-edge hairdryer designed exclusively for professional stylists. This new addition to Dyson's lineup marks a significant step forward in the realm of salon-grade hair tools.

Launching Supersonic r

Unlike its predecessor, The Verge reported that the Supersonic r boasts smart RFID attachments that automatically regulate heat, making it an essential tool for stylists seeking precision and efficiency during New York Fashion Week.

The Supersonic r's unique r-shaped design reflects its focus on professional use. According to Steve Williamson, Dyson's hair care category manager, this design was essential to ensure the dryer is lighter and more maneuverable for stylists. 

The r model is 30 percent smaller and 20 percent lighter, weighing just 325g or 11oz. Williamson emphasizes the importance of catering to salon professionals who use the dryer multiple times a day, requiring enhanced visibility and ergonomic adaptability. 

Dyson's redesign even considers the placement of buttons, such as relocating the cold shot button to a more accessible position under the curve for effortless use, reflecting the company's commitment to meeting the unique needs of professional stylists.

To achieve this, Dyson had to shrink the Supersonic's motor to fit it into the handle, a feat of miniaturization. Similar to Dyson's other hair tools, it features a glass bead thermistor paired with an embedded temperature sensor for heat monitoring. 

However, it employs a distinct heating mechanism. In traditional hairdryers, coils inside the barrel generate heat around a fan. In contrast, the Supersonic r replaces these coils with three symmetrical, stacked foil discs, resembling a grate. 

This design ensures more uniform heating without any cold spots, explains Williamson. In bustling environments where professionals often operate, the Supersonic r is equipped with an air filter located at its base. 

Incorporating New Sensor

Unlike its predecessor, Notebook Check reported that this model incorporates a new sensor that mandates the use of the filter to safeguard the device from salon debris like serums, hairsprays, and hair clippings, ensuring its longevity.

The latest technological advancement in the Supersonic r includes RFID attachments. These attachments automatically adjust the heat and power settings upon attachment, tailored to the desired hairstyle. 

Users have the flexibility to customize these settings according to their preferences, which the device will remember for future use. This feature resembles L'Oréal's upcoming AirLight Pro hairdryer, revealed at CES. 

However, unlike the AirLight Pro, Dyson's iteration does not come with a companion smartphone app. Williamson emphasizes that simplicity and speed are paramount for professionals, aiming to minimize device interaction to enhance efficiency.

The Supersonic r is set to hit the market exclusively for professionals in March, priced at $569.99. When questioned about the possibility of integrating some of the new features, such as RFID attachments, into an updated consumer Supersonic, he remained non-committal. 

Fast Company reported that Williamson stated that Dyson's current focus is on determining which features are most beneficial for both professionals and consumers. Nevertheless, there's still hope for consumers.
