Apple's September Purge: 8 Products on the Chopping Block After the iPhone 17 Event
As the countdown to Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 17 event begins, the buzz isn't just about what's coming, but also what's going. With a major shake-up of the product portfolio on the horizon, reports suggest that Apple is set to discontinue a total of eight products from its current lineup.
This strategic move is designed to streamline the company's offerings and ensure every device in its store is equipped with the latest technology, including the new Apple Intelligence.
The iPhone Lineup Shake-up
The arrival of four new iPhones means the current lineup needs to be pared down. Once the iPhone 17 event concludes, Apple is expected to stop selling four of its existing iPhone models.
- The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are likely on their way out. This will make room for the new standard and Air models. While these iPhones might still be found at other retailers, Apple will no longer carry them in its own stores.
- Following its standard procedure, Apple will also discontinue both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Instead of offering a price drop for these year-old Pro models, Apple typically removes them from its official store entirely to focus on the new flagships.
This will leave Apple with a refreshed, all-Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone lineup.
Wearables and Audio Get a Refresh
Beyond the iPhone, other product categories are due for a trim. The new product arrivals will make several older models obsolete.
- Three Apple Watch models are set to be discontinued: the Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and the Apple Watch SE 2. With new Series and Ultra models on the way, along with a rumored third-generation SE, these devices are at the end of their lifecycle.
- In the audio department, the AirPods Pro 2 is expected to be discontinued. While AirPods 2 and 3 remained on sale after new versions arrived, the introduction of AirPods Pro 3 will likely lead to the older model being removed from the official lineup.
A New Era for the iPhone Lineup
With these products on their way out, Apple's official iPhone lineup is poised to be clearer than ever, with a rumored new pricing structure.
- iPhone 16e starting from $599
- iPhone 16 from $699
- iPhone 16 Plus from $799
- iPhone 17 from $799
- iPhone 17 Air from $949
- iPhone 17 Pro from $1,049
- iPhone 17 Pro Max from $1,199
While Apple's September keynote is always a celebration of new technology, this year's event also signals a significant streamlining of its product portfolio. As 9to5Mac reports on everything from Apple Park, the "Awe-dropping" event promises to mark a major turning point for the company's ecosystem.
