May 2026 Tech Roundup: Huawei's Tao Law, SpaceX IPO, Quantum Computing & More
Semiconductor & AI Hardware
At the IEEE ISCAS 2026 conference on May 25, Huawei's semiconductor division president He Tingbo proposed a new principle for industry development: the "Tao (τ) Law". It is the first time China has introduced a new industrial evolution principle in the global semiconductor field. The core concept replaces "geometric scaling" with "time scaling" (τ), using techniques like logic folding to improve transistor density and system performance. Huawei has already mass-produced 381 chips following this approach, and a new Kirin chip fully adopting logic folding will be released this fall. By 2031, Huawei aims to achieve transistor density equivalent to the 1.4nm process node.
On May 21, the U.S. government confirmed it will allocate approximately $2 billion to nine quantum computing companies, taking minority equity stakes in return. IBM received the largest share at $1 billion to launch a subsidiary called Anderon — America's first dedicated quantum chip foundry. GlobalFoundries received $375 million. Other recipients include D-Wave, Rigetti, Infleqtion, and PsiQuantum.
Memory chip maker Micron surged 19% on May 26, pushing its market capitalization past the $1 trillion mark for the first time. UBS analysts raised price targets sharply, citing anticipated revenue growth from AI demand.
According to IDC, Chinese domestic AI chips accounted for 41% of cloud AI accelerator shipments in 2025. Huawei ranked first in shipments, and DeepSeek completed a massive 50 billion yuan funding round. DeepSeek-V4 now achieves "native adaptation" with domestic AI chips, marking the transition from "usable" to "good".
Global advanced packaging revenue is expected to reach $58.7 billion in 2026, a 97% year-over-year increase. Supply shortages are expected to continue through 2027.
AI Models & Applications
At Google I/O on May 20, the company unveiled Gemini Spark, an AI agent that runs 24/7 in the cloud, and launched Gemini 3.5 Flash for free to all users. Google Search also introduced "AI Mode," replacing traditional link lists with conversational summaries and agentic actions — a fundamental shift for the search business.
Multiple news outlets reported on May 23 that Anthropic is finalizing a $30 billion+ funding round at a valuation exceeding $900 billion, surpassing OpenAI's $852 billion valuation. The company reported Q2 revenue of $10.9 billion with its first quarterly profit of $559 million. About 85% of revenue comes from enterprise customers.
DeepMind introduced AlphaProof Nexus, a framework combining LLMs with Lean compilers that autonomously solved 9 out of 353 Erdős open problems at just a few hundred dollars each. This marks the first large-scale evaluation of formal proofs for open research-level math problems in both the mathematics and AI communities.
Multiple state-owned investors and China Mobile have joined Kimi's latest funding round as the company finalizes a $2 billion raise. Meanwhile, DeepSeek is reportedly negotiating a $10 billion funding round at a $100 billion valuation.
Quantum Computing & Space
SpaceX officially kicked off its IPO process in late May, with market reports valuing the company at $2 trillion. The company also announced plans to achieve 10,000 launches per year within five years. FAA approval, however, requires demonstrated reliability improvements.
On May 19, the joint China-Europe SMILE (Solar Wind Magnetosphere Interaction Panorama Imaging) satellite was successfully launched from the Kourou Space Center in French Guiana. The satellite carries the world's first space-based soft X-ray imager, which will capture full images of the interaction between solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere for the first time.
On May 18, the "Zhu Ri Gong Cheng" team led by academician Duan Baoyan announced a breakthrough in space solar power station and microwave wireless power transmission technology. The team achieved kilowatt-level power output at a distance of 100 meters, laying the foundation for "wireless charging stations" in space.
Robotics & Automotive
On May 18, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology announced plans to deploy 100,000 humanoid robots in factories by the end of the "15th Five-Year Plan" period. The plan focuses on key industries such as integrated circuits, high-end equipment, and automotive, with over 80% of industrial enterprises expected to adopt AI agents.
Tesla VP Tao Lin announced on May 21 that the last Model S and Model X units have rolled off the line at the Fremont factory. The production line will be converted for Tesla's humanoid robot (Optimus) manufacturing.
Announcement on May 25 confirmed that Unitree Robotics' STAR Market IPO will be reviewed on June 1, with the company poised to become the A-share "first embodied intelligence stock." Unitree plans to raise 4.202 billion yuan, primarily for R&D in intelligent robot models.
Ferrari unveiled its first all-electric model, the Luce, in late May. However, the design sparked significant debate, and the stock price fell sharply following the release.
Chips, Storage & Displays
Chip designer Qualcomm announced a deal with global automaker Stellantis to support AI-powered vehicles, adding to its recent gains.
Xiaomi's Lu Weibing announced on May 26 that the company's next-generation operating system will launch in July or August. He also clarified that current test vehicles on roads are not the Xiaomi YU9, though a new model will definitely be released this year.
Huawei began pushing the HarmonyOS 6.1.0.125 SP9 update to Mate 80 series phones in late May, adding features like 3D image wallpapers.
Steam's latest weekly game sales chart (released May 26) showed Forza Horizon 6 reclaiming the global top spot, surpassing Subnautica 2.
Policy, IPOs & Economy
On May 8, the National Energy Administration, together with the NDRC, MIIT, and National Data Bureau, released an action plan for two-way empowerment between AI and energy. The plan includes 29 key tasks aimed at securing clean energy supply for computing facilities and expanding AI application scenarios in the energy sector.
Vice Commerce Minister Sheng Qiuping announced on May 18 that the ministry is working on an "AI + Consumption" policy framework to encourage whole-home smart appliance consumption and customized services.
The 2026 Beijing Science Week kicked off on May 24 at the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The event runs through May 31, featuring innovations in AI, quantum technology, healthcare, and aerospace.
On May 26, China's online game approval list was released, showing 154 domestic games and 4 imported games receiving licenses.
